Summer has officially started and if you kids are like mine, the last thing they want to do is more school. However, keeping the brain active over the summer is a great way to keep the summer slump from happening. And one way to keep the brain active is by reading. All of the local libraries and some local businesses have incentives for children who read over the summer. Here are all the places to check out for summer reading in Jefferson Parish and New Orleans.

Summer Reading In Jefferson Parish
Jefferson Parish Library: The library has a great summer reading program for ages newborn – adults starting June 3, 2017. Newborns to children in grade 5 can read 10 books or 10 hours between June 3rd and August 5th and log the titles online or write them on a paper log for a prize backpack. For children in grade 6 through 12 read for 20 HOURS or do a combination of reading and completing tasks (each task counts as 1 hour) to collect your prizes and enter the grand prize raffle!. In addition to the prices the library offers TONS of free events and activities throughout the months of June and July. Barnes and Noble: Kicking off May 16, 2017, Barnes and Noble is inviting kids in grades 1-6 to celebrate summer by reading. Kids can earn a free book by reading eight books and recording them in your Summer Reading Journal.
Chuck E Cheese: Children can earn 10 FREE tokens to play at Chuck E Cheese by reading for 2 weeks.
Summer Reading In New Orleans
New Orleans Public Library: The NOPL also has a summer reading program. Children and teens need to read a minimum of 800 pages to receive a prize. Just like the Jefferson Parish Library the NOPL will be hosting a TON of fun and free events in conjunction with summer reading. You can check out more on their summer reading page.

Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge: Scholastic Books is hosting a summer reading challenge. From now until September 8, 2017 kids can read and log their minutes to earn prizes.
