August is New Orleans Museum Month and that means free admission to 16 local museums all month long . There is one catch though, you must be a member of one of the museums on the list to get in free to the rest of them. So if you were looking to get that zoo membership, now’s the time.
New Orleans Museum Month Museums:
Ashé Cultural Arts Center – 1712 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd., New Orleans, Louisiana, 70113 – The Ashe Cultural Arts Center creates and supports programs, activities, and creative works emphasizing the contributions of people of African descent.
Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium – 423 Canal St, New Orleans, LA 70130 – Get up close and personal with insects, eat a bug, visit the butterfly garden.
Beauregard Keyes House – 1113 Chartres Street, New Orleans, LA 70116
Confederate Memorial Hall Museum – 929 Camp Street, New Orleans, LA 70130 – The oldest in Louisiana and houses one of the largest collections of Confederate memorabilia in the United States.
Contemporary Art Museum – 900 Camp Street, New Orleans, LA 70130-3908 – A multidisciplinary arts center that is dedicated to the presentation, production, and promotion of the art of our time. Louisiana Residents are also free every Sunday and children and students through grade 12 are free at all times.
The Historic New Orleans Collection – 533 Royal Street (tours) and 400–410 Chartres Street, New Orleans, LA 70130 – Museum, research center, and publisher dedicated to preserving the history and culture of New Orleans and the Gulf South.
Longue Vue House and Gardens – 7 Bamboo Road, New Orleans, LA 70124 – A historic house museum and associated gardens.
Madame John’s Legacy – 632 Dumaine St., New Orleans, 70116 – One of the finest 18th-century building complexes in Louisiana and one of the best examples of French colonial architecture in North America.
The National WWII Museum – 945 Magazine Street, New Orleans, LA 70130 – The National WWII Museum tells the story of the American experience in the war that changed the world—why it was fought, how it was won, and what it means today—so that all generations will understand the price of freedom and be inspired by what they learn.
The New Canal Lighthouse – West End on Lakeshore Drive – The lighthouse offers programs that focus on the history of the lighthouse, the ecology of the Pontchartrain Basin and the critical coastal issues we face today in South Louisiana.
New Orleans Jazz Museum at the Old U.S. Mint- 400 Esplanade Ave., New Orleans, LA 70116 – Celebrates jazz in the city where it was born through dynamic interactive exhibits, multigenerational educational programming, research facilities and engaging musical performances.
New Orleans Museum of Art aka NOMA – 1 Collins Diboll Circle, New Orleans, LA 70124 – NOMA offers innovative experiences for learning and interpretation; and uniting, inspiring, and engaging diverse communities and cultures. NOMA is also free on Wednesdays for Louisiana residents.
New Orleans Pharmacy Museum – 514 Chartres St, New Orleans, LA 70130 – The museum shows the history of pharmacology and promote its further development for the benefit of the general public.
Newcomb Art Museum – Woldenberg Art Center, Newcomb Circle, New Orleans, LA 70118 – closed until August 24, 2017
Ogden Museum of Southern Art – 925 Camp St, New Orleans, LA 70130 – Museum holds the largest and most comprehensive collection of Southern art and is recognized for its original exhibitions, public events, and educational programs which examine the development of visual art alongside Southern traditions of music, literature, and culinary heritage to provide a comprehensive story of the South. Ogden is free every Thursday for Louisiana residents.
Southern Food and Beverage Museum – 1504 Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard, New Orleans, LA 70113 – A living history organization dedicated to the discovery, understanding and celebration of the food, drink and the related culture of the South.
